Legistify vs OnitX ELM: how they compare in 2026
The central choice is between a suite organized around legal materials and case activity and one organized around configurable matters and outside counsel spending. Legistify joins contract review, litigation, intellectual property and notices, with Codex preparing editable work from selected content. OnitX ELM combines invoice intake, financial approval chains, vendor collaboration and payment handoffs, with Spend Agent interpreting billing instructions. Its Sentry and Auto modes determine who acts on an invoice, and a separate switch controls monetary recommendations. Legistify's comparable human decision point concerns proposed agreement revisions, where lawyers inspect tracked Word changes and their explanations. Departments can use both kinds of work, but the purchasing priority differs: managing agreements and disputes favors a close look at Legistify, while controlling invoice review and its financial consequences favors OnitX.
At a glance
All 15 axes, side by side
The same grid applied to every vendor in the index, graded from public sources. Hover a grade to see what the letter means on that axis.
AI Centrality
How much of the product is actually AI. Whether the machine learning is the mechanism the buyer is paying for or a feature layered onto conventional software, and whether the vendor is specific about which is which.
Legistify embeds AI in its contracts, litigation, intellectual property and notice workflows. Codex drafts and analyzes material selected from those modules, while Projects group up to fifty related cases or agreements with shared instructions. Contract tools extract terms, assess playbook rules and produce tracked revisions. Monitor runs scheduled research and presents new findings in a feed or digest. Users can also generate editable Word, spreadsheet and presentation artifacts from their working materials. The underlying platform still handles repositories, case updates, permissions, signatures and deadlines without generative output. AI therefore expands an established legal operations suite rather than defining every transaction in it.
OnitX ELM combines matter, spending and vendor administration with Spend Agent as an optional invoice-review module. The agent interprets natural-language billing guidelines, examines invoice lines, accounts for engagement terms and recommends financial adjustments. Administrators can apply guidelines at client, vendor and matter-vendor levels. Conventional invoice validation, approval chains, budgets, accruals and reporting continue to operate separately. Counsel Exchange supplies the vendor submission and feedback workflow, while the AI adds contextual explanations and review decisions. The platform remains a configurable legal system of record without Spend Agent. Its AI contribution is concentrated on a core spending task rather than replacing every matter-management or financial function.
Citation Accuracy and Hallucination Disclosure
Whether the vendor publishes measured accuracy on citations and assertions, grounds output to primary sources, and says plainly what its system does when it does not know. Legal has a documented public record of fabricated citations reaching filed briefs, so an untested claim of accuracy is not evidence.
Codex Redline presents the original wording, proposed replacement and reason for each change, with tracked revisions preserved in the downloaded Word file. Playbook analysis separates satisfied rules from unmet or inapplicable requirements. Monitor findings include numbered source links that open the underlying material, plus a confidence indication and an explanation of relevance. These features let a reviewer inspect the basis of a proposed edit or research result. No published evaluation quantifies unsupported assertions, citation mistakes or performance across legal tasks. A source link and a favorable playbook finding do not establish that an authority remains current or that an interpretation is correct.
Spend Agent connects findings to applicable billing guidance and opens the affected invoice line, showing the original amount, reason and recommended correction. Matter-level terms can supplement general guidelines, and reviewers can inspect the supplied engagement material. The frequently cited 92% result comes from a 2025 study of six general-purpose models on 50 invoices and 492 lines, not a validation of the current configured Spend Agent. That study used anonymized and synthetic invoices and found considerable disagreement among experts about dispute reasons. Current output therefore has inspectable business sources, but no corresponding reproducible product-wide accuracy measure. The workflow evaluates billing compliance, not judicial authority or subsequent case history.
Autonomy and Oversight Model
What the system decides on its own, what a lawyer must approve, and whether the vendor documents where the review point sits. A tool that drafts under review and a tool that files without one are different products and different risks.
Users choose the files, case connections and project context supplied to Codex. Generated artifacts remain editable, and further requests create versions that can be compared or restored. Redline changes retain Word's acceptance and rejection workflow, with an explanation of each proposed revision. Monitor can operate hourly, daily or weekly after setup, but its described action is collecting and presenting findings. Bedrock Guardrails can block sensitive inputs or mask personal information before processing. No general workflow specifies when uncertain legal reasoning must be escalated, and automated monitoring does not establish authority to file a pleading or execute an agreement for the customer.
Spend Agent offers Sentry, Auto and Disabled modes for each vendor. Sentry leaves approval or rejection with a person; Auto can approve or reject invoices itself. A separate adjustment control can prevent monetary recommendations and automatic corrections while retaining violation analysis. Reviewers inspect red-marked lines, reasoning, proposed adjustments and totals, then accept, reject, alter or reapply recommendations. Client-wide guideline changes require an administrator, and matter-vendor guidance can narrow the applicable terms. The configurable appeals process returns adjusted invoices to firms, with response deadlines, maximum appeal rounds and a designated reviewer. Ordinary approval chains can escalate according to monetary authority. These controls distinguish AI actions, human decisions and routes for reconsideration.
Operational and Outcome Evidence
Named, dated evidence that the product works in production at real firms or legal departments. Case studies with figures and identified customers count. Unattributed testimonials and launch announcements do not.
Named customers describe operational use of the platform. Decathlon's Mihir Shriram discusses the contract management process, while Dabur's Mukesh Mittal describes organizing and labeling contracts in a central repository with automatic reminders for key dates. Shoppers Stop's Pratiksha Shukla describes access to case activity and analytics. These accounts identify users and the work supported, but do not isolate the contribution of Codex or report a measured baseline, observation period and result for AI assistance. General claims about faster work and lower costs therefore remain separate from a demonstrated reduction in review time, missed deadlines or litigation expense.
Corteva's 2021 to 2025 transformation combined Onit workflows, managed services, internal AI expertise and consulting partners. Its case describes invoice processing, supplier-record migration and multilingual assistants, with more than 1,000,000 tasks streamlined and nearly 1,000,000 hours saved across the program. The calculation method and the contribution of OnitX ELM alone are unspecified. Separately, Spend Agent's August 2026 customer aggregate identified 18% of reviewed spending for potential adjustment, with a range of roughly 10% to 45%. That measure concerns recommendations rather than money actually saved, and it lacks customer names and a sample size. Neither result isolates the current agent's causal effect on a department's final costs.
Privilege and Confidentiality Posture
How client confidences are handled: attorney client privilege and work product treatment, segregation of one client matter from another, whether client data trains any model, and what the vendor commits to in writing rather than in marketing.
The service terms promise confidentiality for documents and case information uploaded to an account, retain customer ownership and permit use to provide the service. Public questions and postings have a different, broadly licensed treatment. AI architecture guidance prohibits using prompts, files and outputs to train foundation models and describes processing through Bedrock within Legistify's AWS environment. Litigation administrators assign roles, permission rights and case followers; staff access follows least privilege and confidentiality obligations. The newer Codex model menu includes options not mapped by the architecture guidance, and a complete processor schedule is not supplied. Attorney privilege itself depends on the customer's use and governing law.
Customer Data is confidential under Onit's agreement, with purpose limits, reasonable care and access restricted to personnel or agents who need it. Product-improvement and benchmarking rights nevertheless permit aggregated, anonymized customer-data use, and the third-party training restriction contains a deidentified or aggregated exception. Spend Agent also describes learning from billing patterns and enforcement history. File sharing inherits access from vendor records; vendor users receive selected shared files and cannot access internal AI configuration or audit logs. The contract provides advance notice of compelled disclosure when lawful and a post-termination export window. Privilege preservation, model-provider retention and segregation of derived learning across customers remain unspecified.
UPL and Professional Responsibility Posture
Whether the vendor is clear that it supplies a tool rather than legal advice, who its audience is, and how it addresses unauthorized practice of law, competence and supervision duties, and jurisdiction limits. ABA Formal Opinion 512 is the reference point. Where the advice line is not the duty a product raises, the axis is read through the nearest professional duty it does raise: judicial conduct rules and the reviewing duty for products sold only to courts, and the duty to bill for time actually spent for products that draft time entries.
Legistify states that it is not a law firm and that its information does not constitute legal advice. Its older marketplace terms distinguish the platform from independent experts and discuss lawyers' professional obligations. Codex presents generated material as a starting point for review and refinement rather than a replacement for legal judgment. These boundaries apply alongside drafting, contract analysis and litigation assistance that can influence legal work. The service does not provide a jurisdictional allocation of responsibility for each AI workflow, and its enterprise contracting terms may differ from the general website and service terms. Human review remains necessary before professional reliance.
The services agreement defines Onit as a technology provider rather than a law firm and disclaims legal advice, recommendations and representation. Customers remain responsible for reviewing AI output and obtaining professional advice where needed. Spend Agent's Sentry setting supplies a human approval route, while Auto mode can make invoice decisions under configured guidance. AI features are restricted to legitimate internal business use and cannot be used for high-risk decisions materially affecting individuals. The intended buyer is a corporate legal department with legal operations and finance participants. The terms do not identify licensing jurisdictions, assign every automated billing decision to a licensed lawyer or map configuration choices to specific professional supervision duties.
AI Governance and Bias Disclosure
Published governance over model behavior: who owns it inside the vendor, what is tested before release, and what is disclosed about disparate output across matter types, parties, or populations.
Legistify describes a controlled Bedrock architecture with Guardrails applied to both requests and responses. Input protections can stop sensitive submissions or mask personal information, and safety filters operate on returned content. Guardrail configurations are tested, versioned and deployed as snapshots under Legistify's control. Separate security policies assign ownership, management approval and annual review to the CISO and other responsible personnel. This establishes mechanisms for changing and supervising AI protections, but no legal task evaluation results, demographic bias analysis or model specific acceptance criteria are supplied. The relationship between newer selectable models and the stated Bedrock controls also remains unresolved.
Spend Agent has operational controls for review modes, vendor enablement, guideline selection and action logs, and Onit's AI contract identifies biased and inaccurate output as risks. Its marketing also makes EU AI Act and ISO 42001 compliance claims. A current model-governance framework connecting those claims to release approval, accountable owners and ongoing subgroup testing is not specified. Onit's AI Center of Excellence conducted the 2025 invoice benchmark with explicit consent and anonymized data, but it deliberately tested general-purpose models rather than specialized legal products. That research does not establish the release controls or bias results of today's Spend Agent across firms, currencies, billing practices and matter types.
AI Safety and Data Stewardship
Retention, deletion, access control, and what happens to prompts and documents after they are processed. Whether the vendor states its subprocessors and its incident practice, or leaves the buyer to assume.
Stored files use encrypted S3 storage, and the service applies TLS in transit, access controls and activity logging. Bedrock inference is described as stateless, but Codex automatically saves conversations within the application. Customer data may remain for up to seven years under the AI guidance, with deletion available on verified request and detailed timing supplied individually. Database snapshots have separate retention windows, including monthly copies kept for twelve months. Incident policies define severity, escalation and internal response targets, including thirty minutes for critical incidents. Customer notification follows applicable obligations rather than a fixed published deadline. These controls leave retention and provider coverage dependent on the particular workflow.
Onit's data processing addendum covers personnel confidentiality, differentiated access, secure transfers, logging, audits and prompt notification of a personal-data breach. Its subprocessor register identifies service providers and countries by product, with a subscription-based notice process and an opportunity to object to new providers. Customer records remain available for export for 30 days after termination before deletion under the current retention policy, subject to backup and lawful recordkeeping exceptions. OnitX also supports encryption of selected fields and incoming email content, with historical-data conversion handled separately. Precise purge periods for all AI inputs, derived data and provider logs are unspecified, and the breach commitment has no universal deadline in hours.
AI Liability and Recourse
What the vendor stands behind contractually when its output is wrong. Indemnities, caps, carve outs, insurance, and whether any of it is published or only reachable through a negotiated agreement.
The general service terms disclaim accuracy and broad categories of loss, require users to indemnify Legistify for claims arising from use, and limit the stated monetary remedy to facilitation charges paid through the platform. They do not give a distinct warranty or indemnity for erroneous AI drafting, advice or citations. Those terms contain extensive provisions for expert consultations and public content and expressly allow separate written agreements for particular services. Their remedy should therefore not be represented as a verified enterprise subscription liability cap. A negotiated enterprise agreement could allocate responsibility differently, but its AI warranties, exclusions and insurance terms are not public.
The subscription warranty promises functional conformity and bars material reductions during the term. Customers must report a discovered performance failure within 30 days, after which the remedy process can provide correction or termination with an unused-fee refund. Onit defends qualifying intellectual-property claims involving the service, excluding customer data, certain combinations, customer designs and continued use after a stop notice. The ordinary cap is 12 months of fees under the applicable order, with indemnification obligations excluded. AI output is supplied as is, and standard AI uptime commitments do not apply unless the order adds them. No specific warranty pays for an incorrect Spend Agent adjustment or guarantees the validity of its billing judgment.
Practice Systems Integration Depth
How deeply the product reaches into the systems legal work already lives in: document management such as iManage and NetDocuments, Word and Outlook, contract lifecycle management, matter management, e-billing, and court filing systems.
The litigation API accepts a case identifier and customer reference to begin tracking, and separate webhooks send newly discovered cases and later updates into the customer's database. Implementation requires the customer to expose endpoints and configure authentication. The signature API accepts a PDF and signer details, then returns the executed file, signature timestamps and audit trail through an authorized webhook. Outlook synchronization requires Microsoft administrator consent for Graph mail permissions. SAML setup specifies identity provider metadata and separate test and production callbacks. These instructions identify the information transferred, its direction and the customer's setup work, beyond the integration logos displayed with the platform.
Accounts-payable integration sends fully approved invoices out as payment instructions and imports payment confirmations. The standard SFTP approach exchanges separate invoices-to-pay and invoices-paid files; APIs can operate in either direction. Integrations must use the Invoice Payment child application rather than directly changing invoice records, preserving synchronized payment phases. The REST API supports records, attachments, approvals, history and actions, using a designated API user and defined request limits. Document-system connections include iManage, NetDocuments and SharePoint. OnitX business rules can also map Unity request and RFP events into records and send approved updates back. The separate MCP beta provides read-only external-assistant access, with writes still planned.
Deployment Model and Data Residency
Where the software runs and where the data sits. Multi tenant cloud, single tenant, private deployment, on premises, and whether region of residence is a published option or an enterprise conversation.
Production infrastructure and databases are hosted in AWS Mumbai, and the Bedrock architecture guidance places inference in that same Indian region. Deployment options include shared service components, customer controlled storage or databases, and infrastructure dedicated to a customer under Legistify's management. The deployment table and accompanying explanations reverse the database allocation of two intermediate options, so their labels do not reliably identify the exact configuration. Codex also lists newer Claude and GPT choices without a matching routing description. India hosting is clear for the stated core environment, but processing location and isolation require confirmation for the selected model and deployment arrangement.
OnitX's core legal-management platform uses AWS hosting with a customer choice of the United States or Germany; the latter has backups in Ireland. Counsel Exchange is hosted in the United States regardless of that core choice, and Affinda performs portal PDF conversion in Australia. The Spend Agent register assigns Google Cloud, including Gemini, to the United States and OpenAI to the United States and worldwide processing. Regional storage therefore does not imply that invoice inference stays in the chosen hosting country. The data processing addendum supplies contractual transfer arrangements. The exact tenancy architecture, customer-operated deployment options and a model-by-model regional restriction for every AI request remain unspecified.
Security Certifications and Trust Center
Independent attestation a buyer can pull without a sales call: SOC 2, ISO 27001, penetration test summaries, a trust center with current reports and named scope rather than a badge image.
A downloadable SOC 2 Type II report by FinAudit CPA PLLC covers March 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026 and expresses an opinion on security, availability, confidentiality and processing integrity controls. Its scope includes the contracts, litigation, intellectual property and notice services; AWS controls and customer responsibilities are treated separately. KVQA issued ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for the SaaS activities through August 4, 2028, subject to successful surveillance. A separate ISO/IEC 27701:2019 processor certificate expires May 22, 2027. These are identifiable service organization assurances with scope and dates, rather than reliance solely on the cloud provider's certifications or an AI accuracy guarantee.
Onit describes independent audits against SOC 2 Type 2 and other security standards, alongside encrypted transport, daily backups, restricted access and monitoring. Its data processing addendum provides an annual audit right and permits recent assurance reports to satisfy that review in specified circumstances. OnitX adds field-level encryption for selected text and incoming email, excluding encrypted fields from retrieval indexes; existing historical content requires a separate conversion process. The trust center offers assurance material through an access request. An OnitX-specific auditor, coverage period and full system boundary remain unspecified in the accessible assurance details. Neither a provider's certification nor a compliance claim for AI establishes the scope of Onit's own examination.
Model Supply Chain Disclosure
Which models sit underneath, whose they are, where they run, and whether the vendor commits to telling customers when that changes. A legal buyer inherits every dependency it cannot see.
The AI architecture identifies AWS Bedrock and names Claude and Llama model families, including Opus 4.6, Haiku 4.5 and Llama 3 variants. It describes private AWS processing with Guardrails and no foundation model training on customer inputs or outputs. The newer Codex guide lists additional choices including Sonnet 5, Opus 4.7, GPT-4o-mini and GPT 5.1, but does not reconcile those choices with the earlier provider and regional description. A buyer can identify several offered models, while the exact processing route for each remains unclear. No customer notice commitment explains model substitutions, version retirement or changes to the provider chain.
Spend Agent's provider register identifies Google Cloud, including Gemini, in the United States and OpenAI with United States and worldwide processing. AWS hosts the underlying Onit platform, while separate services handle portal PDFs, email and support. The current production model versions and allocation of invoice tasks between providers are not specified. Six named models appear in the 2025 Better Bill GPT experiment, but that research explicitly excludes specialized legal products and does not identify today's deployed configuration. Customers can subscribe to subprocessor notices and object to a new provider. Onit separately reserves the ability to replace models or prompts without materially reducing core functionality, leaving version-level notification unresolved.
Commercial Transparency
Whether a buyer can learn what this costs without entering a sales process: published rates, the unit being charged, what sits behind an enterprise tier, and what implementation adds.
Legistify sells a configurable legal operations suite covering contracts, litigation, notices and intellectual property, with a demonstration and individual quotation. No starting subscription amount, standard seat charge or included AI consumption allowance is stated. The deployment options indicate that additional infrastructure can be priced separately, but do not attach amounts to dedicated components or customer managed storage. The service terms also discuss expert consultation payments and refunds, which do not establish the cost or cancellation rights of the enterprise software. Implementation charges, model usage limits, renewal increases and the commercial effect of expanding to another module require an agreed proposal.
OnitX ELM and the optional Spend Agent module require a quote. Standard product limits include a 250 MB attachment maximum, an 80,000-row dashboard export limit and 1 TB of storage across production, development and test, with additional storage at $600 per month per TB. Annual Legal Vendor Billing charges can apply to firms submitting invoices through the portal, based on annual invoice activity; those payments can affect the customer's subscription terms. Implementation and additional configuration training are governed by statements of work. Default renewals require 45 days' notice, and sustained excessive AI use can incur overages after warning. The core license rate, setup amount and included agent allowance remain unspecified.
Firm and Practice Coverage
Who the product is actually built for. AmLaw, midlaw, small firm and solo, in house departments, government and courts, and which practice areas are supported rather than merely claimed.
The suite serves corporate legal departments managing contracts, Indian litigation portfolios, intellectual property and incoming notices, with workflows also involving finance, sales and human resources. Case tracking covers Indian district courts, high courts and the Supreme Court, while signing includes local electronic signature options. Codex connects to the different modules and supports drafting, matter analysis and scheduled monitoring from selected material. Named customer examples span retail, consumer products and manufacturing. The service does not set clear organization size limits or provide a task by task language and jurisdiction matrix for AI output. Court tracking coverage should not be treated as universal legal research coverage.
OnitX ELM targets corporate legal and legal operations teams managing matters, outside counsel, invoices, budgets and reporting. Its configurable approval phases and financial integrations fit departments with established workflows and multiple participants. Counsel Exchange gives submitting firms access to assigned matters, invoices, budgets, timekeepers and rate requests, rather than supplying a firm's complete practice-management system. Onit markets across agriculture, pharmaceuticals, finance, insurance, technology and government, with regional hosting and international service teams. Matter administration can span practice areas, while Spend Agent concentrates on billing compliance against supplied guidelines and engagement terms. Exact language coverage, jurisdiction-specific billing boundaries and supported currency combinations for the AI module remain unspecified.
The 12 legal signals, side by side
Recorded rather than graded. These are the questions a practitioner has to answer before a tool touches a client matter, and the answers are taken from public material only.
Client Data in Training
Can material a lawyer puts into this product be used to train a model?
Legistify's AI guidance prohibits using customer prompts, uploaded files or generated outputs to train, fine tune or improve foundation models. It describes Bedrock processing for the requested task within Legistify's AWS account. The service terms separately protect account documents and allow their use to deliver services, while public postings receive a broader license. The training restriction is a policy statement rather than an express AI clause in those terms. Newer Codex model options still need a matching explanation of the provider path and applicable commitments.
Onit's agreement permits aggregated and anonymized customer-data use for product improvement, analysis and benchmarking. Its restriction on third-party models training for others contains an exception for deidentified or aggregated input needed to operate the service. Spend Agent also describes learning from historical billing patterns, firm performance and enforcement history. These provisions do not amount to an unconditional ban on training or improvement use.
Customer ownership and confidentiality duties remain, but no standard Spend Agent opt-out or complete explanation of how derived learning is separated between customers is specified.
Prompt and Output Retention
How long does the product keep what a lawyer typed, and can that be set to zero?
Bedrock is described as retaining no prompts or outputs after inference, but Codex automatically saves every conversation in the workspace. Customer data may remain for up to seven years for legal or tax requirements; deletion can be requested, with completion timing supplied individually. User activity logs remain over a year and technical logs typically fifteen days. Monthly database backups remain twelve months. The older service terms also describe indefinite storage of supplied information. These different layers prevent a single zero retention claim for the product.
Spend Agent stores commentary and review outcomes in Onit's systems, with action history available for audit. The agreement gives customers 30 days after termination to export their records, then applies the current retention policy rather than a fixed deletion deadline. Backup copies and legally required or reasonable internal records may remain under continuing confidentiality restrictions. AI output need not be retained or recreated unless the feature expressly supports it and retention is enabled.
No uniform duration is specified for invoice-processing prompts, provider logs, derived learning or every retained backup.
Ethical Walls and Matter Segregation
Does retrieval respect the firm’s ethical walls, or can the model read across them?
Litigation administrators assign Admin, Legal, Business or Lawyer roles, then toggle the access rights available to each role. Case follower mapping can add a user to every case or limit assignment to selected cases through individual or bulk mapping. Permission management itself is restricted to administrators unless delegated. These are Legistify controls rather than inherited permissions from an outside document management system.
Codex lets users select cases and project context, but formal conflict screening and automatic ethical wall enforcement across every AI connector are not specified.
OnitX file-sharing permissions inherit from the vendor record for internal users, while external users with permission to invoice the client can access the files shared through that relationship. This general sharing facility is distinct from internal matter files. Spend Agent restricts external vendors from AI configuration and internal audit logs, and its review context uses supplied client, vendor and matter-vendor guidance.
The MCP beta executes as the authenticated Onit user. These are native Onit permissions; automatic enforcement of an external document-management system's ethical walls during every AI operation is not specified.
Third Party Request and Subpoena Notice
If someone subpoenas the vendor for a firm’s data, does the firm hear about it first?
The privacy policy permits disclosure for legal requirements, court orders, government inquiries and specified protective purposes. It also describes cooperation with verified law enforcement requests and circumstances in which disclosure can occur without a subpoena. The service terms similarly permit disclosure of account information and content for compliance, enforcement and protection of rights. Neither supplies a general promise to notify the enterprise customer before its material is produced. Security incident communication obligations address breaches and do not create notice rights for compelled disclosure.
Onit's confidentiality clause requires reasonable advance notice of compelled disclosure when legally permitted, plus cooperation at the customer's expense to seek confidential treatment. The obligation covers Customer Data because the agreement classifies it as confidential. The data processing addendum separately requires prompt notice of government or third-party requests concerning personal data unless prohibited.
That contractual route can give the customer an opportunity to respond before production. The broader privacy policy's discretionary language does not replace it. Request counts, challenge outcomes and legally prohibited notification rates remain unspecified.
Primary Law Corpus Provenance
Where does the law in this product come from, and does the vendor have the right to use it?
Legistify tracks Indian court matters and provides case details, orders and hearings through its litigation service. Its coverage describes district courts, high courts and the Supreme Court, and API examples identify individual Indian courts. Monitor can return linked findings about legal developments, while Codex also uses uploaded case materials and optional web results. A consolidated inventory of legal source collections, publication rights, update schedules and licensing terms is not provided. Access to court information therefore does not establish a licensed research corpus for every AI response.
Spend Agent's governing material consists of customer-supplied billing guidelines, invoices and engagement terms. OnitX can attach guidance at the client, vendor and matter-vendor levels, and the current matter-vendor upload permits one combined file. These business records determine financial compliance rather than establish the current law of a jurisdiction. Customer terms require rights to submitted content and permit certain improvement uses.
No primary-law inventory, publisher licensing schedule or legal-source update cadence is specified for this workflow. The historical invoice benchmark is a separate research dataset, not a research corpus supplied to customers.
Good Law Verification
Does the product tell you when the authority it just cited has been overruled?
Monitor provides source links and explanations for detected legal developments, and the litigation service tracks hearing dates, orders and case status. Neither function is specified as a precedent treatment service that determines whether a judgment has been overruled, distinguished or limited. Codex's review instructions retain human judgment but do not supply a licensed citator or an integrated good law verification step.
A current case status and an accessible court order answer different questions from the continuing legal authority of a proposition used in a draft.
Spend Agent associates an invoice issue with billing guidance and the affected charge. Reviewers can inspect the rule, engagement context, proposed adjustment and financial effect. That source relationship supports assessment of the bill, but it does not determine whether a judicial authority remains good law. No case-treatment service, reversal flag or subsequent-history procedure is specified for the module. An OnitX matter record may concern litigation without turning the invoice reviewer into a legal-research system. Authority verification remains a separate step when a team prepares legal advice or court submissions.
Refusal and Uncertainty Behavior
What does the product do when the answer is not in the corpus?
Bedrock Guardrails support a block mode that stops requests containing sensitive information and a masking mode that replaces personal information before processing. The controls apply to input and output, with versioned configurations. Monitor findings also display a confidence indication, such as Medium, alongside relevance reasoning and linked sources. These are described mechanisms, but no repeatable legal task demonstration or error calibration is supplied.
The block condition concerns protected input and safety categories; it is not a general promise to abstain whenever a legal answer lacks adequate support.
The Spend Agent workflow includes a missing-guidelines path: when required billing guidance has not been uploaded, the invoice is returned with a message that processing did not occur. Sentry mode also presents potential violations to a reviewer, who can dispute, approve or adjust the invoice instead of allowing an automatic decision. These controls address missing governing input and review responsibility. They do not specify calibrated confidence levels, a universal low-confidence abstention threshold or an explanation of uncertainty for every ambiguous billing narrative. An ordinary billing-rule rejection is distinct from an AI refusal.
Fabricated Citation Record
Does a public court record exist addressing fabricated or hallucinated legal citations in output from this product?
No entry naming Legistify or LegisAI as the tool responsible for fabricated legal authority was identified in the AI Hallucination Cases database as of October 16, 2026. This result does not measure the accuracy of Codex drafts or establish that its court summaries are free of error. The service's work includes internal contract and matter analysis that may never become a reported citation dispute. Users still need to inspect original authorities and proposed revisions before relying on generated material in professional work.
The reviewed court-decision collection contains no case identifying OnitX ELM or Spend Agent as the source of fabricated legal authority. Loose matches to the owner's name appeared in unrelated text rather than as tool identifications. Spend Agent's normal output is a billing explanation and adjustment, not a brief or judicial citation. That limits what a legal-citation incident would measure, without proving the absence of unsupported billing conclusions.
Onit's AI agreement warns about inaccuracies and hallucinations, and incidents involving unnamed systems cannot reliably be assigned to this product.
Bar Guidance Alignment
Has the vendor engaged in public with the ethics opinions its buyers are bound by?
The general terms refer to lawyers' professional standards and discuss the qualifications and conduct of experts using the marketplace. Legistify also states that it is not a law firm and requires review of AI assisted work. These are broad professional boundaries, not a mapping of particular product controls to a named bar opinion or a jurisdiction's rules on confidentiality, competence and candor. The enterprise user must separately determine how local professional obligations apply to selected models, client information and any generated material used externally.
Onit's community commentary addresses verification duties, candor to courts, unauthorized AI adoption and cautions from Britain's Bar Standards Board about agentic systems. The services agreement separately disclaims legal advice and makes customers responsible for reviewing output. This provides general professional-responsibility context, rather than a mapping of Spend Agent controls to particular ethics opinions. No jurisdictional matrix connects automatic invoice decisions, confidentiality, customer-data improvement rights and client consent with the requirements of named bar opinions. Sentry and Auto settings describe operational choices without certifying compliance with a lawyer's individual duties.
Billing and Fee Posture
Does the vendor address what happens to the bill when the work takes an hour instead of six?
Legistify's enterprise suite supports an organization's internal legal operations, including case budgets, external counsel activity, contracts and notice handling. Efficiency claims concern that department's workload rather than adjusting time charged by its lawyers to clients. The older marketplace terms describe payments for expert consultations, but those payment provisions do not establish AI time accounting in Codex.
No mechanism allocates saved drafting time to a law firm's invoice or prepares a client disclosure about charging for AI assisted work.
OnitX ELM manages legal spending from invoice submission through approvals and payment handoff. Spend Agent reviews the actual charges against supplied billing terms, explains violations and can propose or apply monetary adjustments. Reviewers can distinguish agent, user and conventional-rule adjustments, and firms can receive reasons and appeal changed fees. The financial record is therefore the work product of the system.
It does not establish how much generative AI outside counsel used while performing each billed task, or automatically convert that firm's time savings into an appropriate customer charge.
Outside Counsel Guideline Readiness
Can a firm get this vendor through a client’s AI clause without a bespoke negotiation?
The open help center provides AI architecture explanations, security and privacy policies, access management procedures, deployment options and downloadable audit and certification materials. These supply information about the service's controls and processing that a legal team can use in client diligence. They do not form a complete outside counsel guideline compliance workflow or identify every processor for all current Codex models.
Model routing differences, deletion timing and the exact enterprise contractual terms still require clarification for a client's particular restrictions.
The public Spend Agent datasheet explains review modes, role-based permissions, vendor visibility and exportable audit history. Combined with the product-specific subprocessor register, AI contract and data processing addendum, it gives a client information about the service's providers, operating controls and terms before an agreement is signed. That material can support a firm's response to an AI diligence request.
It does not itself obtain client consent or establish compliance with every outside counsel clause. Enforcing the department's billing rules is a separate function from satisfying restrictions on AI use.
Court Disclosure Support
If a judge’s standing order requires an AI disclosure, can the product produce one?
Codex saves conversations and retains artifact versions that users can compare, restore and download. Redline explains proposed changes and preserves Word's tracked revisions, while Monitor retains dated findings with source links and confidence indications. These features can help reconstruct portions of AI assisted work. They do not establish a complete export tying every answer to its exact model version, full source context and the approving lawyer.
A court specific declaration, certification template or automatic record of independent authority verification is not described.
Spend Agent action logs carry a timestamp, vendor, outcome and review mode, with export by status, date or vendor. Reviewers can inspect invoice lines and explanations, distinguish adjustment sources and preserve changes through the invoice workflow. This supports reconstruction of financial review decisions and identifies AI involvement in the billing record. The export does not promise a model version, complete retrieved-source set and human verification for each generated passage.
A filing disclosure or a regulator's request concerning later use of those conclusions would require additional information beyond the operational audit trail.
The questions both sides leave open
Derived from the records above rather than written, so it cannot favor either vendor. Take these into both conversations and ask each side the same question.
- Good Law Verification
Which one fits
Choose Legistify if
- Contract redlining is a central requirement. Legistify produces Word revisions against supplied rules and presents the original text, replacement and explanation for review.
- The department coordinates litigation, intellectual property and notices as well as agreements. Those workflows sit together in LegisTrak.
- Recurring research needs a defined timetable. Monitor runs at hourly, daily or weekly intervals and returns findings that legal staff can inspect.
Choose OnitX ELM if
- Outside counsel invoices need structured AI review. Spend Agent connects suspected violations with billing guidance and the exact invoice line before a reviewer or configured mode acts.
- Disputed adjustments need a formal return path. The appeals workflow supports a designated reviewer, vendor response deadlines and a maximum number of rounds.
- Finance requires a payment integration. OnitX sends approved payment instructions and receives payment confirmations through dedicated payment records, using files or APIs.
In summary
Legistify
Legistify supports agreement and litigation work through LegisTrak and Codex. Lawyers can select project materials, give instructions, generate editable artifacts and revise agreements. Monitor adds scheduled research with links, while case APIs send updates into the department's other systems.
OnitX ELM
OnitX ELM connects matter administration to vendor bills, approvals and finance. Where invoice decisions need an explicit division of responsibility, the AI Legal Index highlights Spend Agent's Sentry, Auto and Disabled settings. Users can also control whether the agent recommends or applies monetary corrections, separate from showing potential violations.
Questions buyers ask
What remains under human control?
OnitX Sentry leaves invoice approval with the customer, and reviewers can change or reapply monetary recommendations. In the separate task of reviewing proposed contract language, the AI Legal Index emphasizes Legistify's editable tracked changes and Was, Now and Why explanations. Neither workflow makes human review unnecessary.
Does Auto mode mean automatic payment?
Spend Agent's Auto mode can approve or reject invoices. Payment remains a downstream accounts payable workflow using the Invoice Payment application and the configured finance connection. Automatically deciding a bill's review status is not the same action as transferring funds. From the AI Legal Index, based on each vendor's own published materials as of October 16, 2026. No vendor pays for placement.
How do hosting locations compare?
Legistify's core architecture uses AWS in India, with unresolved routing for newer Codex model options. OnitX offers core hosting in the United States or Germany, but Counsel Exchange is in the United States and named AI providers have separate processing locations. A regional core database does not settle the full AI data path. From the AI Legal Index, based on each vendor's own published materials as of October 16, 2026. No vendor pays for placement.
Can a buyer determine the full cost without a proposal?
Both require a proposal for the enterprise scope. OnitX specifies an additional storage price of $600 per month per TB beyond its standard allowance, and Spend Agent is an optional purchase. That storage price is not a subscription or AI starting price. Legistify's quote depends on modules and deployment arrangements. From the AI Legal Index, based on each vendor's own published materials as of October 16, 2026. No vendor pays for placement.
Neither vendor paid for inclusion, placement or a grade, and neither reviewed this page before it published. Everything on it comes from public material on the dates shown. How the index grades.
OnitX ELM remains separate from Unity, although Spend Agent and some integrations serve both. This page uses the current OnitX controls and its one file matter vendor guideline limit. Neither vendor reviewed this page.
