Dragon Legal

Dragon Legal is speech recognition software for lawyers and legal staff from Nuance Communications, a Microsoft company. It turns dictation into text inside the applications a firm already uses, such as Microsoft Word and Outlook, and transcribes recorded audio files. The editions share one legal engine. Dragon Legal v16, sold as Individual and Group, is installed on Windows 11 or Windows 10 desktops and laptops. Dragon Legal Anywhere is a hosted subscription with a light Windows client, run on Microsoft Azure.

It works on virtual desktops and thin clients and syncs a user's custom words and commands with the Dragon Anywhere mobile app. The legal vocabulary was trained on more than 400 million words from legal documents and formats legal citations automatically. Users add their own word lists, voice commands that insert standard clauses, and macros for multistep tasks. A firm shares them through the Nuance Management Center, which also tracks usage and moves licenses between users.

Nuance says dictation runs three times faster than typing with up to 99% accuracy from first use, and that its deep learning engine copes with accents and open offices. Buyers range from solo practitioners to large firms and legal departments.

Capability grades

All 15 axes, graded from public sources on the date shown. Hover a grade to see what the letter means on that axis.

AA on AI CentralityThe artificial intelligence is the product. Remove the models and there is nothing left to sell.

AI Centrality

How much of the product is actually AI. Whether the machine learning is the mechanism the buyer is paying for or a feature layered onto conventional software, and whether the vendor is specific about which is which.

Speech recognition is the product. Dragon Legal exists to turn a lawyer's voice into formatted text, and every feature sits on the recognition engine: dictation into any Windows application, transcription of recorded audio, voice commands, voice based correction and navigation. Nuance describes the current engine as next generation speech recognition built on Nuance Deep Learning technology, with accent detection and automatic microphone calibration, and no speech profile training needed before first use.

The legal edition adds a vocabulary trained on more than 400 million words from legal documents. Nuance sells the legal engine in three editions: Dragon Legal Individual and Dragon Legal Group as installed software, and Dragon Legal Anywhere as a hosted service. None offers generative drafting or summaries; the AI is recognition, formatting and command handling.

CC on Citation Accuracy and Hallucination DisclosureAccuracy is asserted without measurement, or grounding is claimed while output cites sources the reader cannot open and verify.

Citation Accuracy and Hallucination Disclosure

Whether the vendor publishes measured accuracy on citations and assertions, grounds output to primary sources, and says plainly what its system does when it does not know. Legal has a documented public record of fabricated citations reaching filed briefs, so an untested claim of accuracy is not evidence.

Nuance claims up to 99% accuracy from first use and dictation three times faster than typing, and publishes no test set, error rate by condition or method behind either figure. The license agreement for Dragon Legal v16 states that speech recognition is a statistical process in which recognition errors are inherent. Dragon formats legal citations automatically as they are dictated, and the user can play back dictated text in their own voice to compare it with what was said.

The product records the lawyer's own words and cites no authority, so accuracy here means faithful transcription rather than grounding to sources.

BB on Autonomy and Oversight ModelA written commitment that the models work alongside a supervising lawyer, with real review surfaces, short of the full control structure: commonly the threshold at which the system stops or what happens after it is wrong.

Autonomy and Oversight Model

What the system decides on its own, what a lawyer must approve, and whether the vendor documents where the review point sits. A tool that drafts under review and a tool that files without one are different products and different risks.

The lawyer dictating is the reviewer. Text appears where the cursor sits as the user speaks, and corrections are made by voice or keyboard in the same document. The v16 license agreement puts the duty in writing: recognition errors are inherent, and correcting them before using the results is the licensee's responsibility. Playback of dictated audio supports that check. Voice commands and macros run only when the user speaks them.

Step by step commands can carry out a series of actions from one utterance, and custom commands are built and shared by the firm. The software can be run fully hands free, opening applications and placing the cursor by voice. No confidence marking or flag on doubtful words is described, and transcription of recorded audio files runs without the author present, with the same correction duty afterwards.

CC on Operational and Outcome EvidenceCustomer logos and unattributed testimonials stand in for evidence, or results are quoted with no basis stated.

Operational and Outcome Evidence

Named, dated evidence that the product works in production at real firms or legal departments. Case studies with figures and identified customers count. Unattributed testimonials and launch announcements do not.

Nuance quotes results without a basis: dictation three times faster than typing, up to 99% accuracy from first use, and lower spending on outside transcription services. No law firm or legal department is named as a customer on the Dragon Legal pages, and no case study, date or measured deployment is published. Nuance says the product serves solo practitioners through large firms and offers enterprise customers on site pilot programs and quarterly reviews of progress after implementation, without naming any of them.

CC on Privilege and Confidentiality PostureConfidentiality is asserted in general terms, or the commitment lives only in a sales conversation and cannot be read in advance.

Privilege and Confidentiality Posture

How client confidences are handled: attorney client privilege and work product treatment, segregation of one client matter from another, whether client data trains any model, and what the vendor commits to in writing rather than in marketing.

Under the privacy statement Nuance updated on 14 March 2025, when someone uses Nuance voice recognition, Nuance may capture the voice and the words spoken. Snippets of voice data may be manually reviewed and transcribed by employees or vendors to tune and improve the products, with steps such as de identification and nondisclosure agreements taken where possible. The v16 license agreement limits optional usage data to anonymized information on how the software is used, collected only when the user turns the feature on.

Dragon Legal Anywhere encrypts data in transit and at rest. Nothing addresses privilege, matter separation or confidentiality of dictated client material in particular.

Source: Vendor Published
BB on UPL and Professional Responsibility PostureA real position is published on advice versus tooling, short of full treatment: commonly a disclaimer without the supervision and competence dimension, or silence on jurisdiction limits.

UPL and Professional Responsibility Posture

Whether the vendor is clear that it supplies a tool rather than legal advice, who its audience is, and how it addresses unauthorized practice of law, competence and supervision duties, and jurisdiction limits. ABA Formal Opinion 512 is the reference point. Where the advice line is not the duty a product raises, the axis is read through the nearest professional duty it does raise: judicial conduct rules and the reviewing duty for products sold only to courts, and the duty to bill for time actually spent for products that draft time entries.

Dragon Legal is positioned as a tool for the lawyer's own drafting, not a source of advice. It records what the lawyer says, and the license agreement makes the user responsible for correcting recognition errors before relying on the text. The marketing speaks to practice economics rather than legal judgment, pitching dictation with junior associates as a way to make routine flat rate work viable. Nothing addresses supervision of staff who dictate for lawyers, competence duties or use by people who are not lawyers.

DD on AI Governance and Bias DisclosureNo governance position published for a system whose output affects legal outcomes.

AI Governance and Bias Disclosure

Published governance over model behavior: who owns it inside the vendor, what is tested before release, and what is disclosed about disparate output across matter types, parties, or populations.

No AI governance policy, accountable owner, testing regime or evaluation results are published for Dragon Legal. Nuance says its deep learning engine reaches high accuracy for users with accents and in open office or mobile settings, and publishes no measure of how accuracy varies by accent, dialect, speech impairment or microphone. The accessibility features, such as playback of dictated text and command control for users with physical or cognitive disabilities, are described as product features rather than tested outcomes.

The privacy statement's description of human review of voice snippets is the only account of how the models are improved.

Source: Operator Verified
CC on AI Safety and Data StewardshipA generic privacy policy covers the product without addressing what happens to documents and prompts after processing.

AI Safety and Data Stewardship

Retention, deletion, access control, and what happens to prompts and documents after they are processed. Whether the vendor states its subprocessors and its incident practice, or leaves the buyer to assume.

One privacy statement covers Dragon alongside Nuance's other products. It retains personal data while a customer or user is active and for three years afterwards, or longer where business operations or law require. Voice snippets may be reviewed by staff or vendors after de identification where possible. Payments are encrypted to PCI DSS standards. Dragon Legal Anywhere uses 256 bit encryption between client and server and encrypts data at rest.

No product specific retention period for dictated audio or text, deletion control, subprocessor list or incident notice practice is published.

Source: Vendor Published
CC on AI Liability and RecourseLiability is addressed only through a standard limitation clause that disclaims the exposure the product creates.

AI Liability and Recourse

What the vendor stands behind contractually when its output is wrong. Indemnities, caps, carve outs, insurance, and whether any of it is published or only reachable through a negotiated agreement.

The license agreement for Dragon Legal v16 provides the software as is, with the entire risk of quality and performance on the licensee, and excludes indirect and consequential damages. Nuance's liability is capped at the amount paid for the software. The licensee indemnifies Nuance for claims arising from its use of content through the software, and accepts that recognition errors are inherent. Governing law follows the buyer's region: Massachusetts for the United States, Canada and Mexico, Irish law for the rest of the world outside the listed countries. No hosted subscription agreement for Dragon Legal Anywhere is published on the Dragon site.

BB on Practice Systems Integration DepthReal integrations exist and are documented, short of depth: named connections without a description of what they actually move.

Practice Systems Integration Depth

How deeply the product reaches into the systems legal work already lives in: document management such as iManage and NetDocuments, Word and Outlook, contract lifecycle management, matter management, e-billing, and court filing systems.

Dictation works inside the tools lawyers already write in. Users dictate into Windows applications such as Microsoft Word and Outlook, and Anchor Dictation Focus keeps text flowing into one document while the user reads another window. Dragon Legal Anywhere runs on Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, VMware Horizon View and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, so dictation works on thin clients.

The Nuance Management Center administers users, licenses and shared word lists and commands, and stores dynamic profiles so a user can dictate from any computer with no setup. The hosted edition includes the Dragon Anywhere mobile app for iOS and Android, which syncs custom words and commands. The PowerMic microphone can be programmed to step through form fields. No connection to a document management or practice management system is named.

BB on Deployment Model and Data ResidencyDeployment model is stated clearly with partial residency detail, or residency is offered without the processing location being addressed, or the tenancy model is stated on its own with no residency detail published.

Deployment Model and Data Residency

Where the software runs and where the data sits. Multi tenant cloud, single tenant, private deployment, on premises, and whether region of residence is a published option or an enterprise conversation.

Two deployment models are published. Dragon Legal v16 installs on Windows 11 or Windows 10. Dragon Legal Anywhere is hosted on Microsoft Azure in geographically dispersed, active active data centers with 99.5% uptime and reached through a Windows client over an encrypted connection. No region choice or residency commitment is stated for the hosted edition, and the privacy statement says personal data may be transferred beyond the country of origin under applicable law.

CC on Security Certifications and Trust CenterBadges appear on the site with no scope, no date, and no report available.

Security Certifications and Trust Center

Independent attestation a buyer can pull without a sales call: SOC 2, ISO 27001, penetration test summaries, a trust center with current reports and named scope rather than a badge image.

The hosted edition is described as secure and compliant, running on Microsoft Azure, which Nuance calls a HITRUST CSF certified hosting infrastructure. That certification belongs to the host, and no attestation, audit report, scope or date is given for the Dragon service itself. The product pages list 256 bit encryption in transit and at rest and 99.5% uptime. No trust center or route to a security report is linked from the Dragon Legal pages.

BB on Model Supply Chain DisclosureThe supply chain is partly disclosed: providers named without change notification, or architecture described without the providers.

Model Supply Chain Disclosure

Which models sit underneath, whose they are, where they run, and whether the vendor commits to telling customers when that changes. A legal buyer inherits every dependency it cannot see.

The engine is Nuance's own. Product pages describe a speech engine powered by Nuance Deep Learning technology, with a legal vocabulary trained on more than 400 million words from legal documents, and no outside model provider is named or implied. Dragon Legal v16 is installed software for Windows, and Dragon Legal Anywhere runs on Microsoft Azure with automatic updates, so all users work on the same current version. No model version history or commitment to notify customers before the engine changes is published.

CC on Commercial TransparencyPricing is gated behind a demo request while tier names and feature splits are published, so the shape is visible and the number is not.

Commercial Transparency

Whether a buyer can learn what this costs without entering a sales process: published rates, the unit being charged, what sits behind an enterprise tier, and what implementation adds.

The product range and its feature splits are published, and the price is not. Nuance publishes a feature matrix across Dragon Legal Individual, Dragon Legal Group and Dragon Legal Anywhere. The hosted edition is sold on fixed monthly subscription pricing that includes the latest enhancements and technical support at no extra charge, with no per user limit on dictation. Licenses can be moved between users through the Nuance Management Center. The Dragon Legal pages route buyers to a contact form and a sales line. No figure is shown for any edition.

BB on Firm and Practice CoverageSegment and practice coverage is described with substance, short of the boundaries: what is supported is clear, what is not is left open.

Firm and Practice Coverage

Who the product is actually built for. AmLaw, midlaw, small firm and solo, in house departments, government and courts, and which practice areas are supported rather than merely claimed.

Nuance pitches Dragon Legal to attorneys, partners, associates and support staff, from solo practitioners to large firms and legal departments, for contracts, briefs, legal citations and other documentation. The hosted edition targets firms and legal departments that want central administration, and the accessibility features address legal professionals who need accommodation for physical or cognitive disabilities. Group deployments get pilot programs, online training and e learning.

Nuance runs regional Dragon sites for other markets, and the languages and jurisdictions each Dragon Legal edition serves are not stated on the United States pages.

Legal Signals

What each signal means

A signal records what public sources say on the date shown. It is not a grade and it is not a recommendation. Where a signal reads Not addressed, it means the index did not locate the material in public sources on that date, which is a statement about disclosure rather than about the product.

Confidentiality and Privilege

Client Data in Training

Can material a lawyer puts into this product be used to train a model?

Permitted, in policy only

Public material states that customer content trains, refines or personalizes models, with no matching term located in the published agreement. Any de identification, anonymization or aggregation qualifier is recorded in the summary.

Nuance's privacy statement, updated 14 March 2025, says it builds, trains and improves its automated methods, including AI, partly by manual review. Snippets of voice data may be reviewed and transcribed by employees or vendors for product operation, tuning, maintenance and enhancement, after de identification and under nondisclosure agreements where possible. The v16 license agreement covers only anonymized usage data, collected when the user turns the feature on and used solely to tune and improve Nuance products. No term excludes dictated content from model improvement.

Prompt and Output Retention

How long does the product keep what a lawyer typed, and can that be set to zero?

Disclosed fixed window

A specific retention period is published and the customer cannot change it.

Nuance generally retains personal data while a person remains an active customer or user and for three years afterwards, or longer where business operations or law require, according to its privacy statement. The policy covers Dragon with Nuance's other products. No separate period is published for dictated audio, recognized text or the voice snippets kept for review, and no setting lets a firm shorten the window.

Ethical Walls and Matter Segregation

Does retrieval respect the firm’s ethical walls, or can the model read across them?

Not addressed

No located public material addresses walls or matter level segregation.

The Nuance Management Center administers users, licenses and shared custom words and commands across a firm, and stores each user's dynamic profile centrally so administrators can set it once. Nothing describes separating dictation by matter or client, or limiting which staff can reach another user's audio or text. Dictated text lands in the firm's own documents, which carry whatever permissions those systems apply.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Third Party Request and Subpoena Notice

If someone subpoenas the vendor for a firm’s data, does the firm hear about it first?

Disclosure addressed, notice absent

Published terms or policy address disclosure to authorities or in response to legal process, and no commitment or reservation regarding customer notice is located anywhere. The vendor has told the customer that data can leave and has said nothing about whether the customer hears of it.

Nuance may share personal data, its privacy statement says, to comply with law and legal process, to answer government inquiries and lawful requests from public authorities, including for national security or law enforcement. Nothing commits Nuance to tell the customer about such a request or to resist it.

Accuracy and Authority

Primary Law Corpus Provenance

Where does the law in this product come from, and does the vendor have the right to use it?

Not addressed

No located public material identifies the corpus behind the product’s answers.

The legal vocabulary was trained on more than 400 million words from legal documents, which are not identified further. The product answers no legal questions and retrieves no law; it recognizes the user's own speech.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Good Law Verification

Does the product tell you when the authority it just cited has been overruled?

Not addressed

No located public material addresses whether authority is checked for subsequent history.

Legal citations are formatted as they are dictated, and nothing tests them. The user supplies each citation, so whether the authority is still good law sits outside the product.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Refusal and Uncertainty Behavior

What does the product do when the answer is not in the corpus?

Not addressed

No located public material addresses what the product does when it cannot ground an answer.

No marking of uncertain words or low confidence passages is described. The v16 license agreement states that recognition errors are inherent in a statistical process and that the licensee must correct them before using the results, and playback of dictated audio supports that review.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Fabricated Citation Record

Does a public court record exist addressing fabricated or hallucinated legal citations in output from this product?

None located

No court order, opinion or disciplinary record addressing fabricated or hallucinated legal citations produced by this product has been located as of the date shown. This is a statement about the public record on that one subject, not a finding about the product, and this signal is not a litigation history.

The AI Hallucination Cases database maintained by Damien Charlotin, which records court decisions worldwide that address hallucinated AI content and the tool involved where known, has no entry naming Dragon or Dragon Legal. Dragon transcribes what a lawyer dictates and generates no legal content of its own.

Professional Responsibility

Bar Guidance Alignment

Has the vendor engaged in public with the ethics opinions its buyers are bound by?

Not addressed

No located public material engages with bar or ethics guidance.

No Dragon Legal page, license term or privacy statement engages a rule of professional conduct, a bar opinion or court guidance. The license agreement's statement that users must correct recognition errors before relying on the text is a product term, not a reference to a professional duty.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Billing and Fee Posture

Does the vendor address what happens to the bill when the work takes an hour instead of six?

Savings claims only

Public materials claim time savings without addressing billing or disclosure, and the product sits inside a fee relationship between a lawyer and a client where those savings would change the bill.

Nuance pitches Dragon Legal to law firms on time and cost. It claims dictation three times faster than typing and less spending on outside transcription services, and says pairing Dragon with junior associates makes routine flat rate work economically viable. Nothing addresses how dictation time or transcription savings appear on a client's bill.

Source: Vendor PublishedAs of Oct 12, 2026Evidence

Outside Counsel Guideline Readiness

Can a firm get this vendor through a client’s AI clause without a bespoke negotiation?

Not addressed

No located public material supports a client side disclosure obligation.

No subprocessor list, security summary or client facing disclosure pack is published for Dragon Legal, and no hosted subscription agreement is published on the Dragon site. The privacy statement covers all Nuance products, and the hosted edition names only Microsoft Azure as its host.

Source: Operator VerifiedAs of Oct 12, 2026

Court Disclosure Support

If a judge’s standing order requires an AI disclosure, can the product produce one?

Not addressed

No located public material addresses court disclosure or verification certification.

The output is the lawyer's own dictated text, with no record of which passages were dictated, transcribed from audio or corrected. Usage tracking in the Nuance Management Center reports how much each user dictates, not what was recognized in a given document. No export or guidance for disclosing AI assisted transcription to a court is offered.
